Alfons Heiderich is Alphonse Elric's counterpart.

A Parallel World Counterpart is a concept is exclusive to the 2003 anime, referring to a near-exact copy of a person living in a world parallel to their own. This person is extremely similar to their counterpart, both in appearance and personality. It is highly possible that if a person falls in love with another, their counterpart will fall in love with the other person's counterpart. This is backed by the fact that a person who is born will take their parent's genes, and get the genes to make them a counterpart, they would need to have parents who were counterparts to their own counterpart's parents.

When one passes through the Gate, their soul is transferred into their counterpart's body, and is only known to return if their counterpart dies. If a person travels through the gate and their counterpart is dead, the person's whole body will enter the parallel world.

Known counterparts

It's unknown exactly how many counterparts there are, or if everyone has one, but the counterparts known to exist are as follows:

Notably, several major characters, like Roy Mustang and his unit, Izumi Curtis, and Alex Louis Armstrong are never shown or confirmed to have parallel world counterparts despite their importance, and despite appearing in Conqueror of Shamballa.

While unseen in the movie, if the Kids OVA is taken to be canon, then there is very likely a Winry Rockbell counterpart on Earth, as the OVA features Edward's great-great-grandchildren, one of which is a little girl who looks the splitting image of Winry as a child.

In addition to the above, Erik Jan Hanussen is sometimes viewed as Frank Archer's Earth counterpart by fans. In addition to having similar haircuts, Archer's English voice actor, Troy Baker, is credited as voicing "Archer" in the credits despite Archer never appearing in the film, and it's generally accepted that the "Archer" credit is meant to be for Erik Jan Hanussen, whose voice sounds near identical to Baker's performance as Archer, although this has never been confirmed. It should be noted that this similarity does not exist in the original Japanese version, as Archer and Erik Jan Hanussen have different seiyu who give completely different performances. Additionally, if this were truly meant to be the case, it would mean that Erik Jan Hanussen is the only Earth counterpart who has a different hair colour from their Amestrian counterpart (the next most dissimilar, Rose and Noah, still share the same main colour, albeit Noah lacks Rose's pink fringe).

  1. ↑ The last name of Edward's earth counterpart is unknown, though it is possible his last name is Heiderich if he and Alfons Heidrerich are brothers like Edward and Alphonse Elric. Whether or not they actually are related is unknown, although Alfons never mentions having a deceased brother.
  2. ↑ The Japanese Conqueror of Shamballa website's character sections romanises his name as "Alphonse", the same as Alphonse Elric, which is also what the DVD/Blu-ray subtitles use, but the English version's credits for the Japanese "Original Cast" spells his Japanese name as "Alfons". Alfons is the usual German spelling of Alphonse, although both are used. In English sources, his name has been spelt as both Alfons and Alphons.
